Reception

Our themes for this term focus on Growing and our main Learning Challenges will be to find out ‘How does your garden grow?’ and ‘What comes out of an egg?

These themes enable the children to study different areas of the curriculum under one larger topic.

Communication, Language and Literacy Development

The children will listen to and join in with a wide variety of stories and begin to look at non-fiction texts and compare the two . We will continue to practise reading and writing; beginning to read and write simple words  extending their skills to writing and reading 4 and 5 sound words

You can help your child by continuing to listen to them read regularly, encourage them to look at writing all around them and use their knowledge of sounds to begin to work out what it says and  practising blending and segmenting sounds in words.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

The children will have lots of practical experiences so that they can begin to work with numbers 0-20, use the language of addition and subtraction, count on and count back  and find more or less than a given number. They will compare and order different measures, recognise shapes in 2 and 3D and talk about patterns. They will begin to record numbers

You can help your child by using numbers and mathematical language e.g’ bigger, more, less, heaviest, circle, next to , full, empty, etc in their everyday activities. Encourage them to count accurately and recognise numbers in the environment.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development:-

In class we will be using ‘Circle Time’ to give the children opportunities to talk in front of the class and learn to listen to one another. They will also be encouraged to extend their thinking through range of open ended questions; Who? What?  Where? When? Why? How?

You can help your child by talking to them about everything and anything, introducing new words to their vocabulary. Talk to them  about their feelings and the feelings of others and what is right and wrong as they are growing up.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

We will grow plants and find out about how they grow. We will  study mini beasts and dinosaurs and we discover what creatures come from eggs.

Creative Development

The children will develop their creativity through, art, music, role play,

We will have a  café role play area.

Our theme about dinosaurs will help to develop their imaginative play and language

You can help your child by joining in with them at home in pretend play. Encourage them to draw, paint, cut and stick pictures, cards, boxes etc. Now summer is on the way these messy activities can be done outside.

Physical Development

P.E. will continue on Wednesday and Friday mornings  when the children will have Games and Outdoor play whenever the weather allows.

You can help your child by giving them opportunities to develop their big and small muscles by involving them in outdoor activities – play catch, bat and ball, take them to the park or the places mentioned before. Encourage them to begin to adopt a healthy lifestyle by drinking water, eating healthy foods and taking exercise

Finally, Reception Class Assembly takes place on Thursday 19th May at9.00am and parents and carers are very welcome to come and join us.
